How to See Who Viewed Your Instagram Story

Instagram makes it easy to see exactly who watched your story — but the viewer list also creates a lot of confusion about what it really means. Here's how to check it, how long you have, and what the order does (and doesn't) tell you.

How to check who viewed your story (step by step)

Open Instagram and tap your profile picture (your active story) to play it.

While the story is playing, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or tap the small row of viewer icons in the bottom-left corner.

A list appears showing every account that has watched that story.

If you posted multiple story frames, tap between them to see who viewed each one.

Each viewer is listed once, even if they watched several times. A small heart icon next to a name means that person liked your story.

How long can you see who viewed your story?

Stories last 24 hours, and you can see the viewer list during that window plus for roughly 24 more hours after the story expires — so about 48 hours in total. After that, the list is gone for good, even if you saved the story to Highlights. Once it's in a Highlight, new views are no longer tracked individually.

What does the ORDER of viewers mean?

This is the part everyone overthinks. The order is not a stalker ranking, and it is not simply who watched most recently. Here's the reality:

When a story has only a handful of views, the list is roughly reverse-chronological — newest viewer near the top.

Once a story gathers more views (users often report a shift around the 50-view mark), Instagram switches to engagement-based ranking.

After that, the people at the top are those you interact with most — through DMs, profile visits, likes, comments, and Story reactions — not the people watching you most.

So if the same person is always first, it usually means you interact with them a lot, or Instagram thinks you're closely connected — not that they're secretly obsessed with your profile. We break this down fully in our guide on why the same person is always first.

Can you see who looks at your profile (not just stories)?

No. Instagram does not show you who visits your profile, and there is no app that can reveal this despite what the ads claim. Instagram's system simply doesn't expose per-user profile-visit data. Any 'who viewed your profile' app is fabricating results or trying to steal your login.

The flip side: watching others without being seen

Just as you can see everyone who viewed your story, anyone whose public story you watch can see you. If you'd rather check a public account's stories without showing up in their list, an anonymous viewer keeps you off it entirely.

Curious about someone's stories but don't want to appear? Our free Insta Story Viewer lets you watch public stories anonymously — no login required.

Frequently asked questions

Why did some viewers disappear from my list?

Instagram only displays a subset of viewers for very popular stories, and the list vanishes entirely about 48 hours after posting.

Does the viewer list show people who don't follow me?

Yes. If your account is public, anyone who watches appears in the list, follower or not.

Can I hide my story from specific people?

Yes. In Settings → Story, you can hide your story from chosen accounts, or post only to your Close Friends list.
